PASADENA CITY COUNCIL DIRECTS CITY ATTORNEY TO DRAFT A CITYWIDE SMOKING BAN!
May 5, 2008 – The Pasadena City Council, in what was almost a unanimous vote, directed the city attorney to draft an ordinance that will prohibit smoking in all outdoor areas within the city.
Tonight’s council chamber was filled with proponents to the ban that included representatives from Pasadena Public Health and The American Cancer Society.
Local tobacco retailers voiced strong opposition and were visibly agitated at what they viewed as a loss.
The proposal is similar to smoking bans that are currently in effect in the cities of Calabassas, Beverly Hills and Santa Monica.
The ordinance will ban smoking in the following areas:
- Prohibit smoking in outdoor malls, shopping areas/centers.
- Prohibit smoking in outdoor dining areas.
- Prohibit smoking within 20 feet of business entrances/exits.
- Prohibit smoking in public service waiting lines (e.g. movie theatre lines, ATM lines, bus stops/
- Prohibit smoking in public outdoor gathering events/special events/parades/fairs (other than parklands)
The ordinance was approved as submitted with Councilman, Sid Tyler asking the council to review the measure in 12 months in an effort to possibly include multi-family housing thereby upgrading the ordinance.
